CARTERET, NJ — What's the latest on the proposed ferry service from Carteret to New York City?
Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman released this update in the week before Christmas:
In November, a marine construction firm finished installing 130 feet of steel bulkhead along the Arthur Kill waterfront. That will be home to the future ferry terminal landing.

The $473,258 contract was awarded to Agate Construction of Clermont; they started their work in June and it was completed in November.
Dredging of the Arthur Kill began this week. The dredging will make the boat slips deep enough for the ferry. This will cost approximately $2.5 million and has been fully funded from the New Jersey Dept. of Transportation Capital Trust Fund, said Reiman.

The next two phases are building docks and ferry slips, and the construction of a 700-space parking lot, anticipated to break ground in 2023. Once the parking lot is done, that will be immediately followed by the building of a 20-foot-wide elevated pedestrian boardwalk connecting the parking lot and the ferry loading area.
The boardwalk is expected to be completed in 2024, Reiman said.
The final step will be building a ferry terminal building, with restrooms, bar, lounge, office space, restaurants and retail.
“These are the first steps in what will be a spectacular transportation project on a constantly evolving waterfront,” Reiman said this week. “Eventually, there will be restaurants, bars, retail shops, a movie production studio and office space that will help to transform our once entirely industrial waterfront into a work-eat-play destination.”
The Carteret Ferry Terminal is part of Reiman’s vision to transform Carteret’s once-inaccessible completely industrial waterfront. The Carteret waterfront now includes a fishing pier, a public park, a mini golf course and an 185-slip marina.
Reiman also plans to build an events center in the future, and expand the Carteret Riverwalk.
Earlier this year, the Carteret Planning Board even approved a movie studio and a hotel to open in Carteret, although construction on neither has started yet.
“Carteret is quickly becoming one of the most desired locations for commuters to call home,” said Reiman.
