Man Sentenced To Six Years In Prison For Woodbridge Fatal Crash

Carlos Aguirre, 24, was sentenced to a six-year prison term after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.

A judge sentenced a North Plainfield man to six years in prison for causing a fatal drunk-driving crash last year in Woodbridge.

Carlos Aguirre, 24, was sentenced Wednesday in state Superior Court in New Brunswick in connection with the crash on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Judge Dennis Nieves ordered Aguirre to serve a little more than five years in prison before he can become eligible for parole.

According to a news release from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey:

When Aguirre pleaded guilty in to vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, he admitted he was intoxicated on October 19, 2014 when he crashed his car into the back of a tractor-trailer.

His passenger, Edward Galvez, 25, of North Plainfield, was killed.

Investigators determined Aguirre had been driving a 2002 Volkswagen Passat in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike. Shortly after 4 a.m., his car hit the truck as both vehicles were exiting the highway and heading toward the Thomas A. Edison Service Area in Woodbridge.

Galvez was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:39 a.m.

Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Scott LaMountain handled the state’s case.

Aguirre was arrested following an investigation by the New Jersey State Police and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Donald Heck.
