Museums You've Never Heard Of (But You'll Like)

If your kids are bored with the 'same old, same old' activities, try something new this weekend. Here are museums you've probably never heard of, but they have interesting stuff abounding to keep everyone busy and interested.

Join the Harrison Township Historical Society for its spring exhibition, "Going, Going, Gone...Lost Landmarks of Harrison Township." Starting on March 16, the society will display various photographs and artifacts of lost, or soon to be lost, historic landmarks from Mullica Hill, Jefferson, Richwood & Ewan.

The idea for the exhibit was sparked with the approval to demolish the New Jersey Water Company building on Mill Road. The building that was once a gristmill dates back to the early 1800s. This is only one of the several historic structures that have disappeared from Mullica Hill's scenery. Some very recent additions to the "gone list" include the Jefferson School and the Spicer street water tower.

The exhibit will be open from 1-4 p.m. on weekends from March 16 to May 19. Come out to discover memories of the past or to reminisce on simpler times. Mullica Hill is South Jersey's premier destination for antiques, historical exhibits, and tales from the past. Children in grades kindergarten through 5th are invited to the Schoolhouse Museum to hear Mrs. Diorio, Willard School librarian, and guest readers share Irish folk tales and celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Children will have the opportunity to see the museum's current exhibit, THE COLLECTION, featuring treasured 18th- and 19th-century artifacts and textiles donated over the last 60 years by local residents.

Irish stories will be read at 2:15 and 3:15. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A donation of $3 per child, $5 for an adult, or $10 for a family is suggested to support the museum's operating budget. The Schoolhouse Museum is located at 650 E. Glen Avenue in Ridgewood.
