Nardoza Did it Again: Woodbridge Wins Over Perth Amboy

Alex Nardoza's 25 points led the Woodbridge women's basketball team to its second win of the season last week.

Motoring her way toward 1000 career points, senior captain Alex Nardoza led the Woodbridge Barons to an easy 61-49 victory over Perth Amboy last Tuesday at Perth Amboy.

Alex Nardoza netted 25 points and Jordyn Stanley added 13 for Woodbridge, lifting the team to its second win in as many games in the early going of the winter season.

"She (Nardoza) had a great performance, 25 points. She played a solid game. The kids set her up nice," said Woodbridge Head Coach John Moyer.

Coming off a big win over Edison on opening night, the Barons found themselves trailing by a bucket in the opening minutes against Perth Amboy, but quickly gathered themselves and took charge. Once Woodbridge took the lead, there was no turning back as they outscored the Perth Amboy Panthers 20-16 in the opening quarter and finished the half with a comfortable 34-27 lead.

"A balanced offense, that is what led the way," said Moyer.

Woodbridge struggled a bit on defense, offering its opponent more opportunities to score than usual. Perth Amboy found itself wide open behind the arc many times, but couldn't connect with most of the shots. Woodbridge prides itself on its defense, and Coach Moyer recognized the team's struggles.

"We didn't bring intensity with our defense. When you don't bring intensity, teams exploit that. We allowed wide open threes," said Moyer.

Even though Woodbridge had a tough time defending its goal for most of the game, the team seemed to step it up a bit in the fourth quarter. After baskets by Carly Mathews, Taylor Stanley, and Alex Nardoza, the Barons opened the quarter with a 9-0 run. It took Perth Amboy 2:47 to score its first point of the quarter.

"We played well and improved offensively from last game, but could have played better," said Nardoza.

Alex Nardoza was the go-to girl on offense, taking advantage of most of her opportunities under the basket.

"I had a big game scoring, 25 points is a lot for me," said Nardoza

Junior captain Jordyn Stanley and her sister Taylor provided the added offense the Barons needed. Taylor finished just behind her sister with 11 points on the night, including a three point shot in the opening quarter.

"Perth Amboy played well. They gave us a good game," said Moyer. "We overcame our lack of intensity on defense with a solid offense. We had multiple players attack the basket."
