Newark Man Sentenced For 2016 Carteret Sex Assault

A Newark man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole for a 2016 sex assault of a woman in Carteret, inside her home:

CARTERET, NJ — A Newark man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole for a 2016 sex assault of a woman in Carteret.

The man is Kevin Bethea, 60.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. Sept. 30, 2016 Carteret Police responded to a home in that town for a 911 call of a sexual assault.

Upon arrival, officers located Bethea and an adult woman in the home. She said Bethea assaulted, threatened and attempted to rape her.

He was arrested at the home and on July 22, 2021 a jury found Bethea guilty of the crimes of attempted sex assault, criminal sexual contact, criminal restraint and other crimes, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Carteret Police Chief Dennis McFadden.

The trial against him was led by Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Kristen Pridgen.

On March 17, Superior Court Judge Andrea Carter sentenced Bethea to an extended term of 20 years in state prison without parole, as well as parole supervision for life and he must register as a convicted sex offender under Megan’s Law when he gets out of jail in 20 years.
