More details have emerged in a big, ongoing New Jersey house fire on Thursday morning that left several severely burned, police said.

A mother and her two sons were critically injured in the fire that burned their Carteret home, leaving it in ruins, according to WABC-TV.

James Warren says he was sleeping when he was woke by the smell of smoke, and he was able to wake up his mother and brother, according to News12.

Smoke quickly filled the house. The neighbors saw the flames from their home and ran over to help pull the family out, according to the report.

The 85-year-old mother, who was not identified, collapsed at the front door when she tried to escape. She and her 61-year-old son were taken by helicopter to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where they were being treated in the burn unit, according to the report.

Her 58-year-old son was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, and all three were in critical condition late Thursday, according to the report.

EMS members were treating people for burns and neighbors and crews helped pull people from the power, according to News12.

Officials say one side of the home has collapsed, according to the report.

Medevac helicopters were landing in a field to take some of the injured away, CBS2’s Jim Smith reported.

One woman told News12 she and her father had to rip open a door to get the family out. They were sleeping at the time.
