Perth Amboy Man Accused Of Killing Sister

Breaking: A Perth Amboy man is accused of murdering his sister Monday and trying to escape over the Canadian border.

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — A Perth Amboy man was a fugitive from justice after he was charged with murdering his sister Monday and trying to escape over the Canadian border, Middlesex County prosecutors said.

Arun Aftab, 34, of Perth Amboy, is charged with murdering his sister, Urooj Aftab, 32, also of Perth Amboy, either late Sunday night, Oct. 29, or just after midnight on Monday, Oct. 30. Police were alerted by a family friend at approximately 12:10 a.m. Monday to check on the well-being of the sister at their home. The young woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:49 a.m.

On Oct. 4, 2019, Aftab was found not guilty by reasons of insanity in a non-jury trial, according to the Middlesex County Superior Court. He had been charged with murder, burglary and weapons offenses but all charges were dropped and he was acquitted.

Had he been found guilty, he was facing 75 years to life in prison.

Aftab was apprehended by the Canadian Border Patrol as he was trying to enter Canada with a handgun. Aftab is currently being held in Canada, and is expected to be returned to the United States.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office refused to release any further details about the young woman's murder. MyCentralJersey is reporting the brother and sister shared a home on Harbor Town Boulevard in Perth Amboy.

Aftab is charged with murder, possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
