Police Fatally Shoot Man In Stolen Car Chase On Garden State Parkway

A man driving a stolen car was shot and killed by Cranford Police on Dec. 28 on the Parkway South in Woodbridge:

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — A man driving a stolen car was shot and killed by Cranford Police on Dec. 28 on the Parkway South in Woodbridge, according to New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin.

According to preliminary information, police officers from the Cranford Police Department were chasing a stolen vehicle late at night on Dec. 28, close to midnight.

The stolen car crashed on the Garden State Parkway southbound in Woodbridge. After the crash, the car's driver and two officers exchanged gunfire.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 12:04 a.m. on December 29. A firearm was recovered near the driver.

One police officer sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound and was treated at a hospital and released.

The identity of the man killed is not being released at this time.

State law requires the NJ Attorney General investigate anytime someone is killed during an encounter with law enforcement or while the person died while in police custody. The findings then have to be presented to a grand jury.
