Rewarding Others for Community Service on Martin Luther King Jr.

Contributing to the greater good strengthens the community

As we look to 2018 and the challenges our communities face, it is important to consider how community service can help us feel more connected to our neighbors and our neighborhoods. On January 15th in support of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, The Gateway Family YMCA – Wellness Center Branch encourages residents of the surrounding community to honor Dr. King’s legacy by not only giving back and supporting our neighbors, but by reflecting on how each act of community service is a small part of a larger movement to make things better.

At the Wellness Center Branch, 1000 Galloping Hill Rd, Union, members of the community who bring in a can of food to donate to The Gateway Family YMCA’s housing programs are invited to participate at the YMCA for the day including the wellness facility and free group exercise programs. “Inviting the community in our doors and celebrating the fact that they are providing food for the hungry is a very small way of expressing our gratitude,” stated Colleen A. Clayton, Interim Executive Director, The Gateway Family YMCA – Wellness Center Branch.

At Ys across the nation, more than 600,000 volunteers provide crucial support that strengthens our communities. “The Y depends on the service of others to make an impact in our neighborhoods,” stated E. Paul Mickiewicz, Senior Director of Healthy Living. In Union, the Y relies on the help of volunteers to accomplish its mission and provide a welcoming place for everyone to learn, grow and thrive. Through the support of community partners and donors, the Y is able to provide financial assistance for programs and services to those in need. “We’re excited to bring the community into our YMCA to enjoy a workout as a thank you for their donation,” added Krystal R. Canady, CEO.
