WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Some schools in the Colonia section of Woodbridge were put into a very brief "shelter in place" mode Wednesday afternoon after police in nearby Edison received a 911 call about shots fired along Wood Avenue. However, Woodbridge and Edison police investigated and that call appears to be unfounded, said Woodbridge Twp. spokesman John Hagerty.

At 1:10 p.m. Edison police received a 911 call of shots fired along Wood Avenue, said Hagerty. Wood Avenue runs along the border between Woodbridge and Edison townships.

Police investigated and found there was no truth to the report at this time, said Hagerty.

As a precaution, nearby schools including Elementary School 21, 22, 27, Colonia Middle School and Colonia High School were put into shelter in place mode. This meant that all students had to remain indoors, in their classrooms, he said. James Madison Primary, James Madison Intermediate and Franklin D. Roosevelt school in Edison were all placed in shelter in place as well, according to the Edison school district.

The shelter in place was lifted at 1:35 p.m. after it was determined the call was unfounded.
