South Brunswick Officer Tom Spilatore pulled over the 2001 BMW 325 on Route 130 Tuesday evening.

As he issued the teenage Woodbridge driver a summons, the teen got out of the car and told the officer that smoke was coming from the vents in his car, a news release from Capt. James Ryan said.

Spilatore notified the fire department and tried to contain the blaze with a fire extinguisher, but within minutes, smoke was pouring out of the vehicle and the highway had to be shut down briefly, police said.

Ryan told NJ.com that the teen apparently did not realize his car was on fire when he began shooting the video. He told the newspaper that the teen uploaded the video to Snapchat and sent police a copy.

The fire was extinguished by members of the Monmouth Junction Fire Department.

The car was towed from the scene, and Spilatore gave the teen a ride.

Ryan told NJ.com that the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical and was not connected to speeding.
