What Is An Extreme Risk Protection Order? Edison Info Session
Do you think your loved one could hurt themselves or others with a gun? A new NJ law allows family and police to apply for an ERPO.
EDISON, NJ — Do you think your loved one could hurt someone or themselves with a gun? To prevent future gun tragedies and mass shootings, families and law enforcement officers can now apply for Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), also known as "red flag laws."
Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet invites the public to attend an information session to explain New Jersey’s new law on Extreme Risk Protection Orders. This statute provides procedures through which family or household members or law enforcement may apply for an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) against a person who poses a danger of causing body injury to self or others by possessing a firearm.
After a family member or police officer files a petition, there is a court hearing on whether the person is a safety risk, and their access to a firearm is denied.
