Woodbridge Man Swindled Out of $920 in Phone Scam
It happens more than you might think: The 79-year-old Iselin man got a call Friday from someone pretending to be his granddaughter.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ - A Woodbridge grandfather was swindled out of $920 Friday after he got a call from someone pretending to be his granddaughter, and said she needed money.
The 79-year-old Iselin man said he received the call at 9:20 a.m. Friday; a female caller said it was his granddaughter and she had been arrested for a DWI in Bergen County. Another man got on the phone and said he was the public defender and the girl needed $920 to be bailed out of jail. The man was instructed to go to a local Wal-Mart and send the money via MoneyGram to a Wal-Mart in Massachusetts. The man sent the money.
Later in the day, he got a second phone call from the same number, saying another $920 was needed. By this point, the man had called his granddaughter and she told him it was a scam. The man contacted Woodbridge police.
