WOODBRIDGE, NJ — The Woodbridge Police sergeant who was indicted for first-degree aggravated manslaughter for the death of a Carteret man last May will remain on house arrest until his next court date.

Marco Bruno is next due in court April 20.

This was the fatal police shooting that occurred May 29, 2025 outside the Port Reading Krauszers. Woodbridge Police Sergeant Marco Bruno fired a series of gunshots that killed Aamir Allen, 35, of Carteret.

A grand jury indicted him Monday for first-degree aggravated manslaughter. It is rare that police officers in New Jersey are indicted for a crime when they cause the death of someone during the line of duty.

Bruno is ordered to be on home detention and surrender all of his firearms, his firearms identification card, carry permit, purchaser’s permit and his passport, said a spokesman for the New Jersey Attorney General Thursday.

The criminal case against him will be heard in Union County since, by state law, the proceedings cannot take place in the county where the death occurred, to avoid any conflict of interest.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on May 29, 2025, Woodbridge Police were dispatched to a home on East Tappen Street in Port Reading. Police had received multiple 911 calls from the home, reporting a domestic dispute.

The callers reported that people in the home were assaulted with a baseball bat by a man, later identified as Allen. Responding officers encountered Allen, who was carrying a bat while walking in the roadway. Officers repeatedly ordered Allen to drop the bat, said the Attorney General.

Allen did not drop the bat. Allen stood holding the baseball bat as officers continued ordering him to drop it.

Bruno responded to the scene shortly after a transmission was broadcast over the police radio reporting that Allen had struck occupied cars with the bat. Bruno got out of his car and issued several commands for Allen to drop the bat. Bruno then fired six shots from his service weapon. Allen was shot multiple times and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at 1:40 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m. The 911 calls and police body camera footage from that night are available here: https://njoag.box.com/s/9l1izbzat13ixf9ylje8i8ux9yes8vq4.
