Woodbridge Woman Loses $16,000 In 'Homeland Security' Scam

The woman, 68, was contacted by phone from an unknown man who said he was from the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, police said.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — A 68-year-old Woodbridge woman lost $16,000 this week in a scam, police report:

The woman was contacted by phone from an unknown man who said he was from the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. He told her that she had outstanding warrants for her arrest, Woodbridge police said.

He was able to convince her to send him $16,000 in Google Play Cards. It was only after she complied with his request that the woman contacted police and reported the incident.

"No one accepts gift cards, Google Play cards, iTunes music cards or any other type cards as payment for warrants or ticket," Woodbridge police wrote on Facebook Wednesday, Aug. 29. "If you or anyone you know ever receives one of these calls, PLEASE contact the Woodbridge Police Department or the local police department before making any type of payment.
