All About Jeans

When you come home from work and put on casual clothes, what do you wear when it’s too cold for shorts? Odds are, jeans. They’re dressier than sweatpants, but not too formal. They’re perfect to wear to a friend’s party, the grocery store, or a casual date. If you go clothes shopping these days, you’ll see a massive wall of jeans, in all shapes and sizes. Although this may seem intimidating, the many styles of jeans can help you create the perfect look for whatever you set out to do.

Rise: The rise relates to where the jeans will sit on your hips.

-       High-rise or high-waisted jeans are best for men with larger stomachs.

-       Medium-rise is typical for most men’s jeans.

-       Low-rise jeans sit below your natural waist line, normally on your hips.

Cut: The cut of your jeans determines its overall shape and how it will fit to your body. Thus, it’s important to pick the style that will feel most comfortable and complement your body type.

-       Straight cut or straight leg jeans are the most common. If you are slender and/or tall, these will fit your body without being too snug.

-       Boot cut jeans fit closely around the upper leg, but flare out slightly at the bottom. This is another great style for taller, slender men.

-       Relaxed fit or wide-leg jeans fit loosely around both the upper and lower leg. Unlike thinner styles, which will poorly define the body shape, these jeans will fit muscular men.

Wash: After jeans are created, the excess blue dye is washed out, and the chemicals used in the process will result in different colors and patterns. Generally, a darker wash will look more formal and a lighter one will seem more worn and casual.

-       Most men’s jeans are stonewashed. This creates a classic look that is never out of style.

-       Certain washes will make your jeans appear worn even when they are new. The vintage wash is faded and distressed. The dirty wash has a brown tint to it.

-       Acid wash gives the jeans a speckled pattern. These look best with a solid colored vintage shirt.

-       Raw denim refers to unwashed jeans. These start out as very dark, but will fade naturally over time. They tend to be more expensive than washed denim.

With so many variations in jean styles, you can fill your wardrobe with jeans and still create many different looks. No matter your size and shape, or where you are going, you can find the perfect pair for the occasion. Choose your style and wear them proudly!
