Every Day is Earth Day at Christian Health Care Center

As we recognize Earth Day, which was founded in 1970 following a dreadful oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA, Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff has more reason to celebrate Earth Day this year.

As we recognize Earth Day, which was founded in 1970 following a dreadful oil
spill in Santa Barbara, CA, Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) in Wyckoff has
more reason to celebrate Earth Day this year.

One of CHCC’s latest initiatives to conserve energy grew out of a great opportunity to enroll in PSE&G’s Hospital Efficiency Program. PSE&G hired an
engineering firm, and with CHCC’s guidance, they essentially examined
everything on the entire CHCC campus that uses power and affects our more than
100-year-old infrastructure, including lighting, televisions, refrigerators, motors, and the HVAC system. They also examined insulation and windows in all the buildings. After an extensive analysis, the firm identified all the equipment that is not energy efficient. The report summarized the Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) that were identified, along with the associated energy and cost savings for each measure. PSE&G funding will enable CHCC to replace equipment that is not energy efficient. Another engineering firm will be hired to develop construction drawings, provide construction administration and management, and administer start-up/testing/commissioning of the new equipment.

“This is a great opportunity for CHCC to partner with PSE&G in an effort to
reduce our carbon footprint, save energy, and continue to focus on providing
excellent health care for those we serve with a reliable infrastructure comprised of new technology,” said Michael Doss, CHCC’s Facility Management and Business Development Senior Vice President.

“PSE&G is investing $129 million to make more than two dozen New Jersey
healthcare facilities more energy efficient,” said Joe Forline, PSE&G’s Vice President – Customer Solutions. “Aside from the environmental benefits
these energy efficiency improvements provide, they also allow healthcare
providers like Christian Health Care Center to save money on their energy costs
that they can better use for their primary healthcare mission.”

In addition to the exciting partnership initiative with PSE&G, CHCC has
focused on “going green” for more than a decade and has always been
environmentally conscious and dedicated to protecting the environment.
Facilities Development and Plant Operations replaced older lighting with
energy-efficient bulbs, upgraded insulation, replaced electric hot-water
systems with gas systems, replaced black roofing materials with white roofing,
and installed higher efficiency windows, just to name a few projects.

When CHCC opened its Heritage Manor East Nursing Home Great Room five years
ago, it was an inspiring example of CHCC’s commitment to environmental
stewardship. The addition is composed of about 90-perecnt environmentally
responsible materials. All fabrics are “green” fabrics that were either made
from recycled content of by a process that doesn’t produce any emissions. All
wood is genuine wood, not fiber board or particle board, and finishes have
minimal impact on the environment. Equipment is Energy-Star-rated. Lighting is
compact fluorescent. Carpeting is 100-percent recycled and wall coverings have
lead-free ink.

Christian Health Care Center provides a broad continuum of high-quality,
compassionate care, offering superior mental-health, elder-care, residential
living and rehabilitation services. As a non-profit organization, we deliver
care to our community based upon the Christian principles on which we were
founded more than a century ago.
