Windmill at Christian Health Care Center is Lovingly Restored
A wooden windmill has been a fixture on the lawn in front of the De Roo House for many years.

The De Roo House at Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) in Wyckoff is a residence where sponsors of residents and patients, as well as friends of CHCC, are welcome to stay. The De Roo House is dedicated to the memory of Clarence De Roo, who served as a CHCC trustee and employee for more than 40 years. A wooden windmill has been a fixture on the lawn in front of the De Roo House for many years. However, over the years, being exposed to outdoor elements had taken its toll on the windmill. Mr. De Roo’s brother, Albert De Roo, volunteered to repair it. When he finished restoring the windmill, he invited Mr. De Roo’s daughter and son-in-law, residents of Hawthorne, to come and see it.
The De Roo House has a rich history in the area. Mr. Pustus, the owner of a chicken farm on Mountain Avenue, built the De Roo House. In 1956, the De Roo family made the house their home. Clarence De Roo and his wife, Hilda, lived here for more than 35 years, where they raised their four sons and two daughters. Hilda was an active member of the Center's Women's Auxiliary for many years. Clarence became the Center's Business Manager and a trustee in 1956. During his employment, Clarence held the positions of Personnel
Director, Public Relations Director, Dietary and Housekeeping Director, Risk
Manager, Assistant Administrator, and Planned Giving Coordinator. Clarence
passed away in 1996, but has become a cornerstone in the Center's history.
