Cashews Tainted With Salmonella, Distributed In N.J., Recalled

No illnesses have been reported, according the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Thousands of pounds of cashews, some of which were distributed to New Jersey retailers, are being recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Maya Overseas Foods Inc. is recalling 8,000 pounds of their split cashew products because they may be contaminated with the potentially fatal bacteria.

No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said in a press release Friday.

The cashews were distributed between Feb. 18 and March 20 to retailers and restaurants located in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Florida. The nuts were packaged in 7-, 14-, and 28-ounce pouches and 5-pound bags.

The recall was initiated after the FDA discovered Salmonella in the nuts while conducting routine sampling. Maya has stopped producing and distributing the nuts.
