Police Remind Residents To Report Suspicious People, Activities

Chief Benjamin Fox says burglars have become more sophisticated in how they operate.

Wyckoff police want residents to report any suspicious activity they see or hear in their neighborhood to police immediately.

Chief Benjamin Fox advised residents that burglaries have increased throughout Bergen County recently. Fox is seeking the public’s help to help the police by being a “watchdog against crime.”

“If you are suspicious about anything that you feel is out of the ordinary in your neighborhood, contact the police immediately,” Fox said in a public service announcement.

Residents should try and relay a description of the person or vehicle, a license plate number, and in what direction the vehicle or person was headed.

Fox said burglars have become more sophisticated. They prefer to use fast, expensive cars and tend to dress neatly, fitting into the areas they canvas. A burglar may ring a doorbell to see if anyone is at home and may present to be lost or ask for someone who doesn’t live at the house if the door is answered. They tend to target bedrooms, which often contain jewelry and cash, and are in and out of homes in minutes.

Burglars may also pose as utility workers or delivery people. Fox cautions residents to be wary of unscheduled visits by utility workers or delivery persons with unexpected packages or who ask inappropriate questions.

Occasionally, burglars have worked for legitimate delivery or service businesses and target homes to be burglarized at a later time.

Report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 201-891-2121.
