Ramapo HS Girls Varsity Gymnastics Team Named 2014 North Jersey Section 1 State Champion
It is the fourth consecutive year the team has been crowned State Champion.
The Township Committee is congratulating the Ramapo High School Girls Varsity Gymnastics Team and the team’s coach, Michelle Markowsk, for being crowned the 2014 North Jersey, Section 1 State Champion for the fourth consecutive year.
The Township Committee thanked the team members and staff for serving as positive role models for the young athletes of the community and for illustrating the rewards that can be achieved through commitment and diligence in pursuing excellence.
The team accumulated a score of 110.42 on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Ridgewood High School and placed second in the NJSIAA State Tournament on Nov. 13 at Montgomery High School.

Combined with their state sectional championship, the Ramapo HS Girls Varsity Gymnastics team also won their fifth straight North Jersey Gymnastics League Championship on Oct. 27 with a score of 111.3 and claimed their fourth straight Bergen County Championship on Oct. 24 with a score of 111.725, and completed their league schedule undefeated with an overall record of 9 wins and 0 losses.
The team’s hard work and dedication, combined with its great skill, led to the team being named the North Jersey, Section 1 High School Gymnastics Team of the Year by the Star Ledger.

Two squad members, junior Emma Johnson and sophomore Samantha Marion earned 1st place gold medals in vault and beam, respectively, at the Individual State Meet on Nov. 15 at Montgomery High School and have been honored with 1st team (Emma) and 2nd team (Samantha) All State honors while Emma was also named the North Jersey Section 1 Gymnast of the Year by the New Jersey Star Ledger.
The Ramapo High School Girls Gymnastics Team benefited greatly from the dedication, commitment, and leadership of head coach, Michelle Markowski, who was named the North Jersey Gymnastics League and Star Ledger North Jersey, Section 1 Gymnastics Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Elizabeth Sellitto.
A special group of student athletes – Senior captains Jennifer Nacion, Kaela Wong, and Kiely McBrady, juniors Kara Giacose and Emma Johnson, sophomores Samantha Marion, Sara Read, and Kirsten Skead, and freshmen Abby McCarthy, Katie Hoey, Danielle Mamary, Amanda Katz, and Jillian Lopresti “achieved these extraordinary awards and honors by their commitment to unselfish team play, tireless work ethic, outstanding gymnastics skills, and their overall commitment to the sport of gymnastics,” the Township Committee said.
