Ramapo-Indian Hills Schools Want Your Opinion On Next Superintendent

After a year of controversy, the Ramapo-Indian Hills School District, including 2 high schools serving 3 towns, needs a new superintendent.

WYCKOFF/FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ — After a controversial year in the Ramapo-Indian Hills school district, an acting superintendent of schools took over in November, but the district is still looking for a full-time schools chief.

The district recently posted this survey to find out what school stakeholders want in their next leader.

In 2023, after a new board majority took over the school board, they voted to eliminate funding for some programs for student counseling. Then, they reversed their stance after an outcry from the community, including from the sister of a recent grad who had taken his own life.

At the time, Superintendent Rui Dionisio criticized the board and announced his plan to leave for another district come November. He also wrote an editorial calling their vote an "assault on our most vulnerable students."

Months before that, the board majority had also overturned the superintendent's recommendations to discipline students in harassment and bullying cases that were investigated.

In November 2023, interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Baker took over until a permanent superintendent can be approved.

The two high schools in the district, Ramapo and Indian Hills, serve students from Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, and Oakland.
