Wyckoff Firefighters Request Residents Remove Snow From Fire Hydrants

Wyckoff firefighters are asking residents to remove snow and ice from fire hydrants this winter.

Residents are responsible for digging out fire hydrants after snowstorms, officials said.

A house in a local North Jersey town was damaged earlier this year because firefighters had to dig out a snow-covered fire hydrant before they could draw water from it.

“Seconds count when responding to an alarm of fire,” said fire Chief Lou Graglia. “Snow quickly hardens if it isn’t shoveled and is almost as strong as concrete after consistent cold temperatures.”

There are 573 fire hydrants in Wyckoff, officials said.
