Albuquerque Public Schools: New APS Board Members To Be Sworn In Wednesday

Four new Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education members will take the Oath of Office at the beginning of the board’s regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 5, in the John Milne Community Board Room of the Alice & Bruce King Educational Complex (the APS administration building). The new members are:

• Danielle Gonzales, representing District 3, which includes Valley and Albuquerque high schools. Gonzales is a Valley High School graduate and former teacher recently named executive director of New Mexico First, a public policy organization. 
• Crystal Tapia-Romero, representing District 5, which includes West Mesa High School. Tapia-Romero is a West Mesa High School graduate and early childhood advocate.
• Josefina E. Domínguez, representing District 6, which includes Manzano, Sandia, and Eldorado high schools. Dominguez is a longtime teacher who taught for many years in APS. 
• Courtney I. Jackson, representing District 7, which includes La Cueva and Del Norte high schools. Jackson is a La Cueva High School graduate and the mother of two APS students. She recently served on the board of the APS Education Foundation. 

All four board members were elected on Nov. 2 and will serve four-year terms. They join current members Yolanda Montoya-Cordova, representing District 1, which includes Rio Grande and Atrisco Heritage Academy high schools; Peggy Muller-Aragón, representing District 1, which includes Cibola and Volcano Vista high schools; and Barbara Petersen, representing District 4, which includes Highland High School.

The seven women will serve on the first all-female APS Board of Education. 

The board is also expected to elect new officers on Wednesday.  In addition, the agenda includes a discussion regarding organizational structure, including committees, meeting schedule, and committee chair preferences, followed by the election of committee chairs.
