Today's riddle: Why did the girl pig break up with the boy pig? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. How this Southwest city is using smart technology to incentivize drivers to slow down (kjzz.org) — Albuquerque drivers on certain one-way east–west corridors now face new "rest-on-red" smart traffic lights that reward staying at or under 30 mph with smoother green-light travel. City officials say the technology is already cutting speeding and crashes, and they plan to expand it to more intersections, potentially changing how you move around town daily.
2. Delays in trash pickup to continue for several days in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County and Rio Rancho (newsradiokkob.com) — If your trash in Albuquerque hasn't been picked up on schedule, hazardous muddy conditions at the city landfill are to blame, and delays could last several days. Crews are collecting daily from 7 a.m. to dusk, and residents are urged to keep cart lids closed and call 311 if they have overflow. Rio Rancho and Bernalillo County customers can track updates on Waste Management's website.
3. Albuquerque man accused of driving drunk and killing 11-year-old to remain in jail (krqe.com) — An Albuquerque judge has ordered 18-year-old Malachi Velasquez-McCormick to remain jailed while awaiting trial, after prosecutors said he was drunk, high, and speeding on I-40 when a crash killed 11-year-old Braxton Ahasteen. The ruling cites his prior juvenile probation and concerns about community safety, underscoring ongoing worries about impaired driving on local roads.
4. Tomasita's Albuquerque to remain closed for weeks after roof fire (koat.com) — A roof fire has forced Tomasita's on Pan American Freeway in Albuquerque to close for several weeks, just as Balloon Fiesta visitors arrive. No one was injured, but the popular spot must complete extensive repairs and inspections before reopening. The owner urges Albuquerque regulars to support other local New Mexican restaurants and follow Tomasita's online for reopening updates.
5. "The Other Route 66" tells the local, human stories of the Mother Road (kunm.org) — Albuquerque residents can explore their own city's Route 66 stories at the Albuquerque Museum's exhibition "The Other Route 66: 100 Years of People, Identity and Place in Albuquerque," running through January 3, 2027. The show blends art, history, and lowrider culture to highlight everyday lives along Central Avenue, offering a fresh, people-focused take on the Mother Road.
