📰 News we're reading
• Vasquez, NM Delegation Secure Key Funding to Rebuild Roads Outside of WIPP in Carlsbad (house.gov) — Federal lawmakers have secured $10 million to repair the US 285 relief route serving the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, improving safety on a road local workers and residents rely on daily. Officials say the funding recognizes Carlsbad's central role in the nation's nuclear waste program and pledge to keep pushing for more infrastructure support in southeast New Mexico.
• Loving's Evan Leyva and Kaylee Sierra Win Athlete of the Week Honors. Here's who's on the ballot this week (currentargus.com) — Carlsbad sports fans can help choose this week's top high school athlete, with several Cavemen and Cavegirls on the ballot alongside Loving standouts. From football leader Colton McKibben to volleyball setter Chloe Lopez and runner Soledad Martinez, local students are being recognized for big early-season performances.
• 2026 National Cleanup Workshop (exchangemonitor.com) — Carlsbad residents should know that federal officials say an agreement with New Mexico over WIPP's future operations is close, and that the plant will be largely offline for two three‑month maintenance periods in 2027. Those pauses will temporarily halt waste shipments while long‑term cleanup, funding, and nuclear policy issues are debated at a national level.
