📰 News we're reading

• SUV, motorcycle crash leads to fatality (gallupsunweekly.com) — A Gallup motorcyclist died after colliding with an SUV on West Highway 66 near mile marker 16, drawing a response from Gallup Police on May 18. Investigators say the SUV was turning toward the I-40 on-ramp when the motorcycle, reportedly traveling fast, struck it. Both vehicles were totaled, and the officer’s report attributes the crash to the motorcyclist.

• Lodger's Tax funds dwindle (gallupsunweekly.com) — Gallup’s City Council has nearly exhausted its $150,000 Lodger’s Tax event budget, approving nine grants and leaving little for late‑2026 applicants. Councilors debated how to stretch limited tourism dollars across major local events like the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, WildThing bull riding, new festivals, and rodeos at Red Rock Park under stricter funding rules.

• New Mexico subcommittee on federal funding cuts to continue through 2026 (newsfromthestates.com) — Gallup’s own Rep. Patricia Lundstrom is helping lead a bipartisan subcommittee that will keep tracking federal funding cuts to New Mexico through 2026, including Medicaid, nutrition aid, and infrastructure. Lawmakers say the group will now also seek new federal dollars, coordinate with tribal governments, and monitor federal budget changes that could affect services statewide. Their findings could shape whether the panel becomes permanent in 2027.
