Sunland Park council again rejects permits for Station X, Cronica cannabis dispensaries (kvia.com) — Sunland Park’s city council has once again denied permits for two proposed cannabis dispensaries, despite city planners recommending approval and a judge ordering a new quasi-judicial hearing. After hours of testimony over zoning, safety, and cross-border access into Texas, neither Station X nor Cronica Cannabis secured the four votes needed, leaving applicants and opponents awaiting formal written reasons for the denials. 
2. Federal government sues to take Mount Cristo Rey land next to border (kvia.com) — Federal officials are moving to seize 14 acres near Mount Cristo Rey in Sunland Park to expand border wall infrastructure and security technology along the U.S.-Mexico line. The lawsuit targets land owned by the Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County, with compensation to be set by the court. Local church leaders and federal agencies have been asked for comment.
3. Fire Crews Train for Ride Emergencies at Western Playland (kvia.com) — Sunland Park firefighters are training inside Western Playland to practice rescuing riders from roller coasters and other elevated attractions before the busy summer season. Dona Ana County Steps Up Drunk Driving Checkpoints In May (kisselpaso.com) — Sunland Park drivers should expect stepped-up DWI checkpoints this month as the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office sets up random stops across the county between noon and 2 a.m. Deputies will watch for all traffic violations but especially impaired driving, and past crackdowns in nearby Las Cruces show they can issue dozens of tickets in a single hour.
