In conjunction with ShopRite’s Help Bag Hunger Day, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy partnered with the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) to continue Albany County’s Reusable Bag Giveaway Tour at the bus stop in front of the ShopRite location on Central Avenue in Albany and at the CDTA bus stops at Westgate Plaza and on Central Avenue at Colonie Center. Albany County staff were on site handing out free reusable grocery bags to passengers coming and going.

“When I launched Albany County’s Reusable Bag Giveaway Tour, our objective was not only to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics and paper, but to get the bags into the hands of those who need them most. And if you’re using the bus every day and need to go to the grocery store, you’re going to need these sturdy reusable bags, especially the thermal insulated versions for any perishable items,” said County Executive McCoy. “Today’s event is another important step forward, and I’m looking forward to getting these bags to more CDTA bus stops in the very near future.”
“We are happy to partner with our friends at ShopRite Supermarkets and Albany County on Help Bag Hunger Day. Our family of mobility options provide seamless connections in and around Albany County to grocery stores, hospitals, medical facilities and other essential services. It’s important to make sure everyone has access to the everyday essentials that help them live and lead successful and productive lives. Making sure residents have an adequate and sustainable way to carry their groceries and other necessities is critical,” said CDTA CEO Carm Basile.

For those who were not able to get reusable bags today, more bags will be available at the CDTA Customer Service Office at 85 Watervliet Avenue, Albany, NY. Today’s bag giveaway is just the latest stop of the County Executive’s Reusable Bag Giveaway Tour. Previous stops include Crossgates Mall and the ShopRite locations in Albany, Colonie and Slingerlands.
County Executive McCoy held a county-wide reusable bag art contest earlier this year to encourage the public to reduce our reliance on disposable paper bags and protect the environment. The artwork found on these reusable bags being given out was designed by a third grader from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District.
