Today's riddle: The more you take, the more you leave behind. What am I ? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Transfer station planned near Albany's soon-to-be closed landfill (timesunion.com) — Albany's Rapp Road landfill is nearing capacity, and the city plans to open a 26,000‑square‑foot transfer station next year beside the dump to keep trash collection running smoothly. Officials say residents' pickup routines and current garbage fee should stay the same for now, but new transportation and disposal contracts, plus long‑term capping costs, could reshape future budgets and regional dumping arrangements.
2. Beyond tulips: Washington Park's summer gardens go tropical (star-telegram.com) — Albany's Washington Park has traded its famous tulips for lush tropical-style summer gardens filled with elephant ears, banana plants, and colorful annuals around the Moses statue. City gardener Jena DiTonno explains how these plantings thrive in Albany's humid summers, and notes the city will soon seek volunteers to help plant tulip bulbs for next spring's festival.
3. Capital Region BOCES opens registration for part-time nursing program (cbs6albany.com) — Residents interested in starting a nursing career can now apply for Capital Region BOCES' 18‑month part‑time Practical Nursing program held at the Albany Campus on Watervliet‑Shaker Road. Evening classes begin in January, with first‑come, first‑served registration open through Nov. 30 and clinical rotations at several local health care facilities, including the Albany County Nursing Home.
4. Teen killed, 3 others hurt in Sunday Albany shooting (dailygazette.com) — Albany residents should know that a 15‑year‑old boy was killed and three others injured in a shooting early Sunday on Hudson Avenue near Partridge Street. Police say the teen died at the scene despite emergency treatment, while three older teens suffered less serious wounds, and investigators are asking anyone with information to call 518‑462‑8039.
5. City of Albany planning to drastically reduce police overtime budget in 2027 (wamc.org) — Albany leaders are planning a sharp cut to police overtime in the 2027 budget, while also proposing significant property and sales tax increases to close a large deficit. The mayor's $257 million plan leans on new state aid, staff reductions, and tighter overtime controls developed with the police chief, changes that could affect city services, taxes, and hiring in the coming year.
