Earthquake Thursday AM Near Fort Drum

Want to know more about New York's quakes? The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory holds Open House Saturday at its Hudson Valley headquarters.

A small earthquake happened in New York at about 9:50 a.m. Thursday. The epicenter was 124 miles northwest of Albany, 26 miles east of Fort Drum, the magnitude was 1.3 and it took place more than six miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

That's no big deal, you say — why across the world there have been 19 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher just in the past 24 hours! (See the USGS's earthquake list and map.)

Still, it's good to know about these things. And it's good to know about the science, too.
