ASTORIA, NY — A mom-and-pop home goods store, known for its custom and ready-made window treatments, has been a fixture on a historic Astoria street and will close in the coming weeks.

Fantasy Curtain & Linen Shops first opened on Steinway Street in 1951 and moved to its current location at 30-32 Steinway St., near 30th Avenue, in 1956. An employee confirmed to Patch Tuesday that the store will close in the coming weeks.

Founded by Harry Last and his son Mel, Fantasy Curtain & Linen Shops has remained a cherished family-owned business in Astoria for decades. Originally a small retail shop, it has grown into a full-scale custom interiors store, featuring a single-story, 5,000+ square-foot showroom on Steinway Street.

The store specializes in high-quality upholstery and custom window treatments for customers looking for unique, made-to-order pieces—from one-of-a-kind headboards and tailor-made valances to motorized window treatments, made-to-order bedspreads and more.

When one resident shared news of the upcoming shutdown on a Reddit forum, others reflected on the store’s longtime presence in the neighborhood.

"Steinway has become a ghost town and has lost its luster," one user wrote.

"That’s unfortunate. It is one of the few long time business survivors of Steinway Street. They have been there for decades," said another.

A reason for the closure was not immediately disclosed.
