📰 News we're reading

1. Auburn approves full city tax exemption for qualifying disabled veterans (fingerlakes1.com) — Auburn has approved a full city property tax exemption for homeowners who are veterans with permanent, total service-connected disabilities, potentially wiping out city taxes on about 10 local properties starting with the 2027 roll. Other Auburn property owners will see a very small increase—about $1.45 for an average home—while eligible veterans must still apply through the assessor's office once state forms are released.

2. Nurse attacked at Auburn hospital (newportdispatch.com) — A nurse at Auburn Community Hospital was allegedly strangled with a stethoscope in the emergency department, prompting a swift response from Auburn police. Officers later arrested Christopher B. Titus, who now faces felony strangulation, attempted assault, and weapon charges, and he was arraigned in Auburn City Court and sent to Cayuga County Jail.

3. Auburn adding stop signs at 3 intersections, including one with 10 crashes in 5 years (auburnpub.com) — New stop signs are coming to several Auburn intersections, including Capitol and Perry streets, Drummond Street at North Hunter Avenue, and North Marvine Avenue at Ross Street Extension near Herman Avenue Elementary. Auburn Police Sgt. Greg Gilfus outlined how these changes aim to reduce crashes and improve safety for drivers, students, and nearby residents.

4. Finger Lakes hospitality scholarship application now open (mytwintiers.com) — Students and workers across the Finger Lakes can now apply for the 2026 Hospitality and Tourism Scholarship, with applications due by Oct. 30 and winners honored Dec. 8 at a celebration in Auburn. If you're pursuing a tourism or hospitality career, this is a chance to earn support and be recognized at a regional event right in Auburn.
