4 Suffolk County Beaches Closed To Bathing

The beaches were shut down after high levels of bacteria were found in the area.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY - Several beaches in Suffolk County on Tuesday are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

The advisory was issued at Corey Beach in the Town of Brookhaven and Benjamins Beach, Bayport Beach and Sayville Marina Park Beach in the Town of Islip.

Tanner Park Beach in the Town of Babylon and Tides Beach in the Town of Brookhaven closed on Sunday due to excess bacteria and remain closed.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
