BABYLON, NY — A Yonkers man who admitted stabbing a stranger in the neck at a Babylon residence and fleeing the scene was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in prison, Suffolk County prosecutors said.
Robert Brozowski was sentenced after pleading guilty in September to first-degree assault, a violent felony, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said.
Brozowski will also serve five years of post-release supervision.
According to court documents and Brozowski's admissions during his guilty plea, he was visiting the victim's roommate at a Babylon residence during the late evening of Aug. 29, 2025.
Prosecutors said Brozowski attempted to start a verbal argument with the 38-year-old victim without provocation before stabbing him in the neck with a knife. The two did not know each other before the attack.
Brozowski was on probation at the time for a domestic violence felony conviction in New Jersey, according to the district attorney's office.
After the stabbing, Brozowski fled in a red 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, prosecutors said.
At about 11:58 p.m., Suffolk County police officers from the First Precinct responded to the residence after two people called 911 for help.
A nearby patrol officer spotted Brozowski's truck traveling north on Deer Park Avenue before it entered the westbound Southern State Parkway, prosecutors said.
The officer attempted to stop Brozowski, who initially pulled over before driving away moments later, according to the district attorney's office. Brozowski eventually pulled over and was taken into custody.
The knife used in the attack was never recovered, prosecutors said.
The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he underwent extensive emergency surgery to repair injuries to his trachea and esophagus. He has since been discharged and continues to recover, according to prosecutors.
Brozowski pleaded guilty Sept. 24 before Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei, who imposed the sentence Wednesday.
According to prosecutors, Brozowski has previous convictions in New York for reckless endangerment, driving while ability impaired by alcohol, assault and criminal contempt.
His New Jersey record includes a 2023 conviction for aggravated assault, strangulation and domestic violence, prosecutors said.
Brozowski was also previously found guilty under the Uniform Code of Military Justice of communicating a threat and two counts of assault in 2013, according to the district attorney's office.
He is represented by attorney Eric Besso, who was not immediately available for comment.
"The defendant's wanton act of violence has now led to 18 years in prison as a direct consequence of his unprovoked, criminal actions," Tierney said. "We hope this sentencing brings the victim a measure of closure as he continues to recover."
