Babylon High School Students Build Their Own Solar System
Scale Model Accurately Demonstrates Planetary Distance, Size
Babylon High School’s 7th grade science students created their own scale model of the solar system on the school field. The activity allowed the students to accurately demonstrate the relative distance and sizes of the planets in our corner of the galaxy.
From Mercury to Neptune, labeled paper circles served as representations of the planets, and they were precisely made to represent the relative size differences between the orbiting bodies. Then, the class made measurements to determine where the circles would be placed along a straight line to ensure the model accurately represented the relative distance between the planets. Along the way, the students asked questions about the planets, their orbits, size and distance from the sun. Overall the project was a great success!
