Babylon Memorial Grade School Starts the Year With STEM
Fourth Graders Engage in Fun Problem-Solving Activities
Fourth graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School began the 2022-2023 school year with a pair of fun, hands-on STEM lessons.
In Ms. Arcoleo and Ms. Gentile’s fourth grade class, students acquainted themselves with the scientific method and were posed with the question: “How many mini marshmallows can one transfer from one location to another using a straw?” Using the steps of the scientific method, the students formed a hypothesis and proceeded to test their hypotheses with their own straws and mini marshmallows.
Over in Ms. Jankow’s fourth grade class, students were given a different challenge to overcome. They were tasked with saving Sam the worm, who had fallen off of his boat. The students were given four different materials and worked in teams of two to brainstorm ways to rescue Sam. The students came up with their own hypotheses, tested them, and shared the results with their peers.

While posing these problem-solving challenges, the students were introduced to not only the steps of the scientific method, but also presented engineering challenges with the potential to inspire further interest in the subject.
