BES Staff Embark on a Treetop Adventure

Teambuilding Retreat Brings Adult Social-Emotional Learning to the Classroom

This summer, staff members at Babylon Elementary School went on a treetop adventure at Adventure Park. This teambuilding retreat featured different levels of zip-line and rope climbing challenges to help foster a culture of exploration, discovery and courage for the staff that they can bring back with them to the classroom.

Babylon Elementary School Principal Thomas Keogh led the retreat, and said he looked to place a special focus on adult social-emotional learning with physical challenges designed for all skill levels, similar to how curriculum is designed at Babylon Elementary School.

“The Babylon School District follows the CASEL—or Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning model—which is a framework for engaging the entire school community to create a caring, motivating, and equitable learning environment, and one of the main focus areas is on Adult SEL,” Principal Keogh said. “As the school leader, I was looking to set up a structure for staff to have the opportunity to challenge themselves and cultivate a growth mindset with the end goal of having them reflect on how we can integrate this same ideology into our daily teaching. Overall, the day was the perfect combination of challenge and fun!”
