BES Students Get a Lesson in Robotics

First Graders Begin Experimenting with Ozobots, Learn Basics of Programming

First graders at Babylon Elementary School are getting their first lessons in robotics. Through small, handheld devices called Ozobots, students are learning the basics of programming through fun, interactive activities.

The lesson included discussions about the difference between humans and robots. Then, each student was given a piece of paper, a black marker, and an Ozobot. The students were tasked with figuring out how to make the robots move, and through trial and error, they were able to draw paths with the black marker for the Ozobot to follow. Through the lesson, the students learned how to program their Ozobot to go where they wanted it to. The first graders are excited to continue working with the Ozobots and learn more about their functionality in upcoming lessons.

The lesson, along with those at Babylon Elementary School’s Makerspace facility, give students a variety of opportunities to become acquainted with the basics of STEM, including engineering and computer programming, providing various ways for students to explore their interests.
