'Heartbroken By the Horror': Babylon Superintendent On Texas Shooting

BABYLON, NY — The Babylon School District, along with other schools across Long Island, are addressing Tuesday's shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and two adults were killed.

In a letter to parents and students, Superintendent Linda Rozzi wrote on Wednesday that the district is "heartbroken by the horror" of the shooting, and that their condolences are with families of the "innocent lives that were senselessly and so violently" taken.

"Schools are nurturing, welcoming and loving spaces, and as we continue to process the tragedy, I want to reassure you that Babylon continues to place the health, well-being, safety and security of our students and staff as our highest priority," wrote Superintendent Rozzi.

She went onto say that the administration continuously reviews and updates security and safety procedures, and protocols are regularly tested in the district.

"Our dedicated security force is terrific and will continue having a strong presence today and in the days ahead, to confirm a sense of safety in and around all schools," she wrote.

Suffolk County Police also announced on Wednesday that they would step up the patrolling of schools. Some districts such as Sayville School District have added additional security to its schools.

No threats have been reported.

Rozzi also stated that district social workers, school psychologists and guidance counselors are available at each school should any student or adult need support and reassurance of their safety.

"As with all acts of violence against innocent children and people, we are experiencing a watershed of emotions: disbelief, sadness, worry, anger and more," she wrote. "We are fortunate to have such a close and supportive community, which uplifts us in times of national tragedy. Please continue to keep Uvalde, Texas in your thoughts and prayers. Be well. Stay safe."
