A New Makerspace for Babylon Elementary School
Facility Gives Students Time to Explore and Play, Promotes Innovative Thinking
Babylon Elementary School recently unveiled a brand-new Makerspace—an area of exploration and creativity—located in the school library. The Makerspace comes as part of a significant effort made by the District to promote innovative thinking and give its youngest students more opportunities for tactile learning.
Students began using the Makerspace at the start of October, and have so far enjoyed this new addition to their learning experience. Students are given time in the Makerspace every other week as part of the students’ enrichment classes. Makerspace activities include interacting with teddy bear counters, linking cubes, wooden blocks, magna-tiles, Lego wall construction, magnetic tracks and so much more. All of these activities are aimed at helping students engineer and build physical structures. The lessons also have an important value or lesson built into them, such as compromise and determination, as well as Babylon Elementary School’s three core values: safety, respect and responsibility.
“I am beyond excited to see our students taking advantage of our new Makerspace this school year,” said Babylon Elementary School Principal Thomas Keogh. “It is important that our students have time to explore and build, and the enrichment sessions in the Makerspace give students this opportunity. It gives them an environment where students can have fun, while also learning and growing intellectually.”
