Property Taxes Could Rise? Babylon Village Sets Hearing On Tax Cap Override

Tax cap override, façade board and new diner proposal up for discussion at Village Hall.

BABYLON, NY — Babylon Village residents will have a chance to weigh in this month on a proposal that could allow the village to adopt a budget that exceeds New York State’s property tax levy cap.

The Incorporated Village of Babylon Board of Trustees is scheduled to hold a public hearing Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 153 W. Main St., where officials will consider a proposed local law permitting the village to override the state-defined “tax levy amount” under General Municipal Law §3-c. Approval of the measure would not automatically raise taxes, but it would legally allow the village to pass a future budget that increases property taxes beyond the state cap.

In addition to the tax cap override discussion, trustees will also hear public comment on two other matters: the creation of a Façade Improvement Board to be added to the Retail Business District section of the village code, and an application for a special use permit to open and operate the Whiskey Down Diner at 175 E. Main St.

Village officials said all interested parties will be given an opportunity to speak at the hearing. Copies of the proposed local laws will be available for public review at Village Hall at least five days before the meeting during regular business hours.

The notice was issued by order of the Babylon Village Board of Trustees and signed by Village Clerk Jean Marie Parker.
