United Methodist Nursery School Blocks Out Hunger

The students at the Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School participated in Block Day on March 13th and 14th.  To help raise awareness of the needs in our community, each child brought in a box of cereal and together they built a towering structure to “block out” hunger.

The United Methodist Nursery School collected a total of 185 boxes of cereal which will be distributed by the local food pantries for those in need.  

“The children enjoyed building the structure and were excited to see it transform over the two day event.  Most of the children predicted it would look like a castle or a city when they were finished,” said Administrator Lisa Murray.  “At the same time,” she added, “the children learned the importance of being part of a community and how they can help others.  One child asked if she could bring a box of cereal to her grandmother who is still not able to live in her home as a result of Superstorm Sandy, which demonstrates just how compassionate young children can be.”

The school, now in its 42nd year, serves 155 families, some with more than one child in the program. The school offers programs for 2 ½, 3 and 4 year olds in age-appropriate learning settings.
