W. Babylon Schools Honor Legacy of Dr. Seuss

Elementary students in the West Babylon School District recently honored the birthday of author Theodor Seuss Geisel, more famously known to readers as Dr. Seuss. The celebration of his birth took place in conjunction with the nationally recognized Read Across America Day, the nation’s largest reading celebration supported by the National Education Association.

On March 1, students immersed themselves in the world of Dr. Seuss and took part in several Seuss-themed activities throughout the day. Exploring the works of Dr. Seuss, students used his characters and unique writing style to discuss a myriad of literacy themes, including creative writing and rhyming. Some students used the technology available to them to participate in learning games such as “Dr. Seuss Jeopardy,” while others got their hands dirty and explored the states of matter by creating “oobleck,” the gooey green substance referenced in the Dr. Seuss classic “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.”

“Dr. Seuss has always had a wonderful way of using fun characters and silly stories to engage young readers, and today we honor that tradition,” said Debbie LoSardo, a first-grade teacher at the district’s South Bay Elementary School.
