Bayside Senior Non-Profit To Get $15K From Federal Spending Bill

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A non-profit supporting seniors in Bayside will likely receive tens-of-thousands of dollars from the federal government, Congresswoman Grace Meng announced Thursday.

Selfhelp Community Services, which provides emotional wellness activities and Alzheimer's resources alike at its senior center in Bay Terrace, was granted $15,000 from a trillion-dollar government spending package passed in the House this week.

The funding for Selfhelp, which will go directly towards the non-profit's wellness and nutrition activities, is part of nearly $10 million that the local Congresswoman secured for projects in Queens.

"This money will go a long way toward making Queens healthier, safer, stronger, and even more resilient," said Meng. "As we continue recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, we must build back stronger and ensure we have the resources that our communities need and deserve."

In addition to the allocation for Selfhelp's senior services, Meng secured millions more dollars for immigrant-led non-profits and local hospitals alike.

The money comes from a twelve-bill spending package, which is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law my President Biden soon.
