NYPD Member Probed Over Potential Role In Capitol Riot: Report

NEW YORK CITY — A NYPD member is under investigation over accusations they participated in the pro-Trump riot that stormed the U.S. Capitol, according to a report.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea first revealed the probe during an interview with NY1.

"I can tell you that there is one investigation that is active on one member,” Shea told NY1. “There is no name yet released because we don't know yet if it's true or not, but I can tell you that anyone committing crimes certainly would have a very short shelf life with the NYPD.”

The probe will unfold as NYPD prepares to send 200 officers to Washington, D.C. to help with security during President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20, the New York Post reported.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser asked federal officials to amp up security after a pro-Trump mob overran the Capitol on Jan. 6., sending lawmakers scurrying for safety.

The riots left five dead, the Capitol building in shambles and brought down widespread condemnation on the pro-Trump mob. Lawmakers across the country have called for President Donald Trump’s resignation or removal by the 25th Amendment or impeachment over his role in inciting the mob.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city will look into reports that NYPD, FDNY or any city employee participated in the attack.

“Any New York City employee, any part of the city government, who participated in an attack on our democratic institutions, who participated in an insurrection at the Capitol will be terminated. Period,” he said. “If we have proof that someone violently attacked our United States government, they will not be working from New York City any longer.”
