Bed-Stuy Area Suffers More Than 600 Coronavirus Deaths
Newly-released city data shows about 9 percent of reported coronavirus cases in the zip codes covering Bed-Stuy ended in death.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — The coronavirus pandemic's human toll in the Bed-Stuy area now has official numbers: 605 dead, 6526 confirmed cases.
And that's just as of Monday, when health officials released long-awaited death counts from the city's neighborhoods.
Bed-Stuy, like many poor neighborhoods largely consisting of people of color, appeared hard-hit by the virus. More than 9 percent of its confirmed cases ended in death, according to the data.

The deaths in the six zip codes covering at least part of Bed-Stuy are:
- 11205 zip code — 44 deaths

- 11206 zip code — 142 deaths
- 11213 zip code — 125 deaths
- 11216 zip code — 59 deaths
- 11221 zip code — 116 deaths
- 11233 zip code — 119 deaths

The city data also lists the 11212 zip code, with 207 deaths, in the "Bedford Stuyvesant - Crown Heights" neighborhood. That zip code is generally considered Brownsville.
It's a zip code that also saw one of the highest death rates in the city — 260 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the data. Canarsie's death rate topped the city with 612 deaths per 100,000 people.
Black and brown people citywide had a coronavirus death rate of about 200 per 100,000 people, the data shows.
White people's death rate stood at 102.04 per 100,000 people.
City data also released Monday showed Bed-Stuy's Marcy Houses had the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases — 21 — among the city's NYCHA properties.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and City Councilman Robert Cornegy, who represents Bed-Stuy, plan a news conference Tuesday at the Marcy projects to "demand answers on why tenants weren't notified sooner," according to a press release.
