Bed-Stuy Pastor's Son Charged With Raping Child In Church

Mathew Gibson stands accused of repeatedly raping a 9-year-old girl he was related to inside a Howard Avenue church, court records show.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN – A man sexually abused a young girl relative inside his father's Bed-Stuy church, according to court records and reports. Mathew Gibson, 44, is charged with repeatedly raping the girl, beginning when she was 9-years-old, inside the Progressive Baptist Church at 293 Howard Ave., according to a criminal complaint.

The attacks continued for four years, the legal papers say.

Gibson, the son of the Bed-Stuy church's head Ben T. Gibson, began abusing the girl after her mother died and she began visiting on weekends, the New York Post reported.

The girl finally told her brother and legal guardian about the abuse when she was 14 and Gibson was reported to police, according to the Post.

Gibson was charged with sexual conduct against a child, incest and endangering the welfare of a child in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Jan. 11, according to the criminal complaint.

State records show Gibson was held on a $10,000 cash, $100,000 bond bail and was taken to the Brooklyn Detention Complex.

Patch was not immediately able to reach Gibson's attorney for comment.
