Bed-Stuy Ranks In Top 10 Stop-And-Frisk Precincts: Data

NYPD conducted 261 stop-and-frisks in Bed-Stuy last year, according to data. The precinct covering East New York led the city with 495.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — NYPD officers conducted more stop-and-frisks in Bed-Stuy than almost any other precinct in the city last year, according to data.

But the 261 recorded incidents of the controversial and unlawful search in Bed-Stuy paled in comparison to neighboring East New York.

That neighborhood's 75th Precinct had 495 stop-and-frisks recorded in a citywide data release — the most of any precinct in the city.

Three Brooklyn police precincts counted among the top 10 neighborhoods for reported stop-and-frisks, according to the data. The precincts, neighborhoods and stop-and-frisks were:

  1. 75th Precinct, East New York and Cypress Hills - 495
  2. 23rd Precinct, East Harlem - 366
  3. 52nd Precinct, northern Bronx - 324
  4. 67th Precinct, East Flatbush and Remsen Village - 323
  5. 19th Precinct, Upper East Side - 291
  6. 43rd Precinct, southeast Bronx - 285
  7. 25th Precinct, northern East Harlem - 277
  8. 32nd Precinct, northeastern Harlem - 266
  9. 79th Precinct, Bedford-Stuyvesant - 261
  10. 40th Precinct, southernmost Bronx - 256

City officials promised to scale back the stop-and-frisk practice which critics argue disproportionately targets people of color and a court found was unconstitutional.

But a recent LegalAid study found the number of stop-and-frisks increased by 22 percent in 2019. NYPD officials disputed the findings, arguing that it shows a better reporting practices rather than a true spike in incidents.

There are 77 police precincts in New York City. The least reported stop-and-frisks occurred the precinct covering Central Park, according to the data.
