Hot Bird Owner Closes His Bed-Stuy Speakeasy

Pelican closed just months after Hot Bird, the owner's other Brooklyn bar, was forced to shut down so developers could build a high-rise.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN -- A Bed-Stuy speakeasy shut down just months after the owner's other Brooklyn bar, Hot Bird, was forced to close so developers could knock it down and build a skyscraper.

Bed-Stuy bar Pelican, on Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Hancock Street, served its last round of drinks on Saturday night, former Hot Bird owner Frank Moe announced on Instagram.

"Pelican is closing," stated the brief message, signed by FM. "Thank you for your support."

Moe first opened the cozy speakeasy in August 2018, after a two-year revamp of the space, the Bed-Stuy Blog reported at the time.

News of Pelican's closing came just month after Hot Bird, Moe's beloved outdoor bar in Clinton Hill, shut down so developers could build a 312-foot-tall tower on Clinton Street and Atlantic Avenue.

Another bar is slated to open in the Pelican space, according to the Instagram post, but Patch was unable to reach Pelican for more info about it.
